The Rally Dakar represents the arguably most gruelling motor-racing test for man and material. Contested in South America for the second time, it took the competitors across more than 9,000 kilometres of the most difficult terrain. So, Volkswagen’s second consecutive win, secured this year with the Volkswagen Race Touareg 2, represents a particularly outstanding feat. And even better: at the end of the 2010 Dakar, all the three podium positions were secured by the husky Volkswagen off-road vehicles.
For the Spanish pairing Carlos Sainz and co-driver Lucas Cruz, it was the first Dakar triumph. “I made a dream come true,” two-time World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz (1990 and 1992) beamed therefore.
