Sainz wins 2010 Dakar rally
2010 Dakar Rally, 14th stage*
In his fourth effort, two-time World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz has won the Dakar Rally, with his Volkswagen Race Touareg II. In the battle for the overall win, the Spaniard pipped his team-mate Nasser Al-Attiyah who won the final stage.
It was a battle to the final checkpoint: in the 206-kilometre stage to Buenos Aires, Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar) and his coordinator Timo Gottschalk from Berlin were 36 seconds faster but in the end, winning the final stage wasn’t enough for the pairing to defeat their Volkswagen team-mates Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz (both Spain) in the battle for the overall win. With a lead of 2:12 minutes, the Spanish pairing celebrated the win in the most prestigious off-road rally of the world. So, two-time World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz (1990 and 1992) finally made his dream come true, in his fourth Dakar appearance. And Volkswagen Motorsport celebrated a one-two-three: behind Sainz/Cruz and Al-Attiyah/Gottschalk, Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/South Africa) took their Race Touareg to third position. Meanwhile, record Dakar winner Stéphane Peterhansel and his co-driver Jean-Paul Cottret (both France) took their X-Raid BMW X3 CC to fourth position, thus proving to be the best of the teams not racing for Volkswagen. They won four of the 14 special stages.
