Tough VW battle
2010 Dakar Rally, 12th stage*
Carlos Sainz defends his lead and wins stage 12 – the toughest 476 kilometres of the 2010 Dakar Rally. With two more days to go, VW team-mate Nasser Al-Attiyah still follows close behind.
Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar) and his coordinator Timo Gottschalk (Berlin) just don’t give up. On the toughest stage of the 2010 Dakar Rally, the pairing pressurised the leaders in the overall standings, their team-mates Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz, up to the very last kilometre. At halftime of the stage from San Juan to San Rafael in Argentina, the lead of the two Spaniards over Al-Attiyah/Gottschalk amounted to some four minutes. But during the second, rather sandy half, Al-Attiyah really went for it, reduced the gap step by step and in the end, he finished just 52 seconds behind Sainz – with just two more stages to go. The team-mates of the two leading pairings, Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/South Africa), completed the stage that featured some extremely fast early sections 4:22 minutes behind the winners, in third position. In the overall rankings, they also hold third place, 28:12 minutes behind the leaders.
