VW Race Touareg 2
It’s Hummer time
2010 Dakar Rally, 4th stage*
US warhorse Robby Gordon shows the favourites what you can do with a Hummer. Together with is co-driver Andy Grider, he wins the fourth Dakar stage held in Chile, with his independently prepared vehicle.
What a surprise for X-Raid-BMW X3 CC driver Stéphane Peterhansel (France), the overall leader of the 2010 Dakar Rally. His toughest opponents, the Race Touaregs of Volkswagen Motorsport had set slower times than the leader but then came the Hummer: the 160-kilometre special stage from Fiambalá, Argentina, to Copiapo, Chile, was won by US motor-racing legend Robby Gordon with a time of 1:40:21 hours. At the end, he was just a second faster than the driver of the German X-Raid Team. A truly surprising result as the split times at the checkpoints made everybody believe that the pairings Peterhansel/Cottret and Al-Attiyah/Timo Gottschalk would battle it out for the stage win. At the end of the day, Al-Attiyah finished third with his VW Race Touareg, 2:25 minutes behind Gordon.
