X Raid BMW wins opener

2010 Dakar Rally, 1st stage*

In the Dakar opener from Colón to Córdoba, Nani Roma defeated VW ace Carlos Sainz and his X-Raid team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel. Due to strong rain, the first stage had to be shortened.

The 2010 Dakar Rally started in Argentina with the stage from Colón to Córdoba. In their BMW X3 CC Turbodiesel entered by German X-Raid GmbH (Trebur), Spaniard Joan ‘Nani’ Roma and his French co-driver Michel Périn had opened a 2:07-minute gap over the best Volkswagen Race Touareg – the one of the Spanish pairing Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz - when crossing the finish line. “A fantastic start for Nani and Stéphane,” beamed Team Principal Sven Quandt. Nonetheless, he was of the opinion that the Touaregs had enjoyed an advantage. “The character of stage one should have suited Carlos Sainz and Nasser Al-Attiyah better. Therefore, we are particularly delighted with having secured a stage win that early.”
