Review 2010 Dakar
One of the biggest challenges of our time was contested over 9,000 kilometres across Argentina and Chile: the 2010 Dakar Rally that was started on 1st January, 2010, in Buenos Aires.
Following the successful debut in 2009, the most renowned off-road rally of the world was held in South America for the second consecutive time – across eight Argentinean and five Chilean provinces. The route took the competitors from ocean to ocean, comprised two crossings of the Andes – in the shadow of the 6,000-metre mountains – as well as a significant section in the merciless Atacama Desert that is 100 times as dry as the notorious Death Valley. More desert, more heat, more height – the Dakar Rally is far more than just a motor-racing competition – it’s the biggest adventure available in the motor-sport world.
The enthusiastic spectators and fans accompanied the event with loads of passion, thus not only motivating the drivers and co-drivers to give there very best but also supporting the service crews. Volkswagen had sent some 80 staff members to be able to prepare the vehicles every night for the forthcoming challenge represented by the next stage. And for the fifth consecutive time, the rally baggage also was accompanied by two Spiess engineers.
On the days, the service crew with its 23 vehicles and all the necessary spare parts as well as tents, mobile kitchen and own energy generators covered the 10,000-kilometre service route in climatically difficult conditions to be ready for their jobs in the evening. A task that demanded just as much passion as the one displayed by the competitors – and we are delighted that our employees made it back home fit and well.
