"Superior Volkswagen performance in the Rally Transiberico, representing the kick-off of the FIA Marathon World Cup," writes the competent internet portal 'racing.de'. And indeed: on three of the four days of the Transiberico held in Portugal, Volkswagen prevailed.
At the wheel of his Race Touareg, Carlos Sainz won together with his co-driver Michel Périn, followed by Mitsubishi's Nani Roma. The Race Touareg is equipped with the 2.5-litre high-performance unit designed by tuning experts Spiess.
"I'm truly delighted with having secured my maiden Volkswagen win and my maiden triumph in marathon rallying," said Sainz. "The four stages proved to be extremely tough, hot and exhausting as the winding circuit didn't provide any opportunities for breathers. We succeeded in opening a nice gap in the opening stages, hence, we could control the pace, afterwards."
