VW relies on diesel power made by Spiess
The biggest compliment was launched in one of the November issues of
the motor racing magazine 'Motorsport aktuell': "Furthermore, the common
rail 2.5-litre TDI engine with the Dual Stage supercharging technology,
built by engine specialists Spiess, is a true power package," wrote Germany's
most important and most competent motor racing weekly, thus praising the
Spiess designed engine for the Race Touareg 2 WV is going to enter in
the world's most prestigious desert rally, the Dakar. "We contest this
event to win it", Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen defined the
goal for the Dakar 2006. In 2004, the Volkswagen squad successfully completed
the event and in 2005, the team secured a podium finish.
Eight Spiess employees developed the five-cylinder diesel engine
for Volkswagen's Dakar Rally works appearance in just five months. So far, 13
engines have already been delivered, with a total quantity of 25 engines being
scheduled. "The official horse power output and torque add up to 275bhp and
more than 550Nm respectively," revealed 'Motorsport aktuell. "Yet, the usable
speed range from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm is far more important."
"We are truly proud of having been involved in such a vital project,
by VW," said Holger Spiess. "This offers us the chance to also prove our
diesel competence. We are truly happy with the result and now we hope
for the appropriate dose of luck for the VW Team, during the 2006 Dakar
Rally.
