Formula Super V
In 1978, the opportunity arose to turn another engine into a
power unit that had what it took to succeed on the race track: a VW engine.
The Wolfsburger manufacturer announced a new single-seater series: the Formula
Super Vau. The engine powering the cars was a water cooled 1.6-litere engine.
Peculiarity: dry-sump lubrication to achieve an optimum mounting position in
the single-seater. The regulations stipulated that every cylinder had to be
equipped with an individual 32mm restrictor, in the intake cross-section. Spiess
mounted this air restrictor as close to the cylinder head's intake wall as possible,
thus achieving an optimum approach flow. In the case of this engine, the adjustment
of air restrictor / camshaft / exhaust system represented the crucial performance
criterion.
