STW
The design of the Opel engine for the Super Touring Car Championship
(STW) represented the logical consequence to the Formula 3 successes. The STW
regulations stipulated an engine limited to 8,500rpm. Still, Spiess achieved
an impressive 314bhp, with this 2-liter power unit. A completely newly designed
cylinder head that was turned by 180°, in the engine bay, resulting in a significantly
shorter exhaust way. The know-how used by Spiess for designing the cylinder
head and the camshaft was crucial on the way to the motor-racing success.
