With the VW project, a bold Spiess Tuning idea was turned into
a Formula 3 engine that had what it took to succeed over many years: is it possible
to turn a production 1.6-litre engine into a winning 2-litre Formula 3 power
unit? The enormously extensive test bench works in particular contributed to
the success of this project. Spiess took this chance as there was no adequate
VW or Audi 2-litre engine available. The regulations stipulated a 24mm air restrictor.
The peculiarity of the VW engine tuned by Spiess for Formula 3 was its long
stroke of 94.5 millimetres. This long stroke turned out to be the crucial success
criterion as the engine curtailed by the air restrictor didn't allow for high
revs.
