Comeback in Formula 3
In autumn 2007, Volkswagen makes its comeback as Formula 3 engine
supplier with a 210bhp 2-litre engine. Following numerous and successful test-bench
tests executed at Spiess Motorenbau GmbH in Ditzingen, Team RC Motorsport contests
the first test races on the Formula 3 Euro Series grid.
The Volkswagen Formula 3 engine features the consequent use of
light alloy, resulting in perfect attributes for the use in motor racing. Both
crankcase and cylinder head are made of aluminium - the perfect precondition
for optimally realising the stipulated Formula 3 single-seater minimum weight
of 550kg.
Since the beginning of the project, in 2006, the Volkswagen engine
also executed - in addition to the test-bench runs - on-track tests. "We started
a consequent development programme that was geared to long duration. During
the period of testing, our engine has covered a mileage of about 2,500 kilometres,
to date," underlines Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen.
