ATS Formula 3 Cup
The ATS Formula 3 Cup represents a national race series that
was created mainly for newcomers - both teams and drivers. The series was founded
back in 2003 and is regarded as successor of the International German Formula
3 Championship that proved to be successful since its debut season held back
in 1975.
"Formula 3 was a crucial factor for my career," Michael Schumacher
says regarding his 'apprenticeship'. Back in 1990, the seven-time Formula 1
World Champion secured the German Formula 3 Championship title, thus attracting
the attention of the higher motor-racing categories.
The ATS Formula 3 Cup is held by the German Formula 3 Association
with a lot of far-sightedness. The head of organisation is Bertram Schäfer who
secured the German Formula 3 title twice as a driver to then become one of the
most successful Team Principals. Thanks to its multifaceted press work, the
ATS Formula 3 Cup does not only represent the well-established fastest German
single-seater series but also attracts a lot of international attention. In
every season, it is contested by drivers from 10 to 20 different nations.
The season comprises about ten events, with two rounds being
held per race weekend. The two 30-minute practice sessions are followed by two
25-minute sprint races.
Spiess Tuning is represented by a big fraction, on the ATS Formula
3 Cup grid: by the Opel engines of the families I and II, the OPC-Challenge
power unit specially designed for durability and cost-efficiency - and the new
Volkswagen Formula 3 engine.
