In 1977, the NSU days slowly came to their end. Spiess used the new, bigger facilities to focus on a new project: Audi. More precisely, on the 1.6-litre engine of the Audi 80 that was tuned for motor racing. New machinery, such as a camshaft grinder, proved to be of value within a short time and contributed to the optimum power output. The main focus was set on the cylinder head, the camshaft and the intake system. And again, reliability was another main focus of this project as the cars often had to cope with race distances of four or even six hours. The success of the Spiess engines quickly convinced Audi to also charge Spiess with building the racing engines of the works cars.
