New category – new hope

There is something new going on in the Eastern European single-seater sport. Thanks to – inter alia – the initiative of Franz Wöss, organiser of the Austrian Formula 3, and Jiri Micanek from the Czech Republic, a new category called NF 1400 was created. And once again, Spiess executed pioneering work, here. On 25th and 26th September, 2010, the 21-car field featured for the first time a Dallara powered by the new Spiess engine.

And the maiden appearance proved to be an extremely successful one: With his Dallara F307 NF 1400, Francesco Lopez did not only set the fastest race laps in the two races held at Brno, Czech Republic, but also finished runner-up twice. “We are more than happy with this result,” Jürgen Spiess said following the successful debut. “You mustn’t forget that we began designing the engine just four months ago.”

The new FN 1400 is based on the Opel OPC Challenge engine that is well-known from the ATS Formula 3 Cup and also has been representing a synonym for low-cost motor racing, there. FN 1400 races are held not only in the Czech Republic alone but also in Austria, Poland and Slovakia. And Spiess is involved in each of these series.

Nonetheless, it currently can’t be said what the future will bring. The start in 2010 was just too late for establishing an own championship – the planning for the 2011 season already had been completed to a large extent. But there is ‘new hope’ – and there could be good news as early as next year.
