Simulation and success
2007/08
The fastest German single-seater series now is called ATS Formula 3 Cup.
For many years already, wheel manufacturer ATS has been involved as partner
in national and international Formula 3 racing. ATS is the only manufacturer
worldwide to produce low-pressure casting aluminium Formula 3 wheels. The series
will be called ATS Formula 3 Cup up to 2009 at least. The changed name, however,
makes no impact on the resounding success of Spiess. The 2007 ATS Formula 3
Cup Champion, Carlo van Dam, also relies on the engine from Ditzingen, on the
way to his success. The winning OPC-Challenge engine was designed by Spiess
Tuning exclusively for the German market - as cost-saving and steady engine
option.
In 2007, Volkswagen - an extremely successful Formula 3 competitor
in the past - makes its comeback on the Formula 3 stage as engine supplier.
First test races on the Formula 3 Euro series grid are held in September 2007
and the first win is celebrated as early as 2008 - in the third race of the
season, held in Pau, Southern France. At the same time, the new Volkswagen engine
also is used in the ATS Formula 3 Cup: by the reigning champions, the team of
Frits van Amersfoort.
