When DTM (German Touring Car Masters) is recreated, Spiess also is on the series' grids: with an Opel Astra V8 Coupe. A close battle for the title starts right at the beginning of the season but despite numerous race wins, Opel is pipped when it comes to securing the title. In the coming years, Opel and Spiess represent important pillars of the globally appreciated touring-car series DTM.

2001
For the first time, General Motors USA is supplied by Spiess with completed engine components for the American Le Mans Series. A new Opel engine generation is designed for the use in Formula 3 and the 'old' and the new engines are raced simultaneously.
