Touring cars on the upswing
1990/91
After more then ten years of work, the successful VW Formula 3 project comes
to its end. It is followed by an era with Opel. The new Opel-Spies has got what
it takes to succeed in Formula 3 right from the start. Hence, Michael Schumacher
is one of the last drivers to have secured a Formula 3 Championship title while
relying on a VW-Spiess engine.
1992
Now, the roads to success is continued with Opel. In 1992, for instance, the
German, French and Italian Formula 3 Championships are won.
1997
Finally, there is a new touring-car project in Germany: Opel and Spiess win
the German Super Touring Car Championship (STW) manufacturers title as early
as in 1998. At the same time, Spiess engines also are used in the British Championship,
with the South African Championship following in 1999.
