The winning system
1978
The first single-seater with Spiess engine is launched: Helmut Henzler secures
the Formula VW Super VAU German and European Championships right away. For the
first time, Spiess mechanics also travel to the races and work on site. They
maintain and attend to the engines at every round. In 1979, the first Formula
3 engine from Ditzingen is designed.
1981/82
The on-track successes result in economic success. The company moves to a new
building and a new, state-of-the-art test bench is put into operation.
1984
A Formula 3 engine is designed by Spiess without works contract. In 1988,
this engine also convinces the VW works team and as result, the squad switches
to the Spiess power unit. Several championship titles follow.
