Spiess: the beginning
1963
First success on four wheels: Siegfried Spiess secures the German Hill Climb
Championship with NSU. In 1965, he repeats this triumph. The Spiess tuned engine
of the NSU 1000 is used by NSU for the production car TTS. The foundation stone
for the future tuning company has been laid. Further championship titles follow
in 1967 and 1968, then, ‚Siggi' Spiess retires from active motor racing.
1972
Spiess Tuning is founded on 22nd March. In 1978, the first engine test bench
is put into operation, at Spiess. The final championship title with a Spiess-NSU
engine is secured in 1974 by Willi Bergmeister as the Neckarsulm based car manufacturer
merges with Audi, in 1977. Spiess Tuning also accedes this change and the first
championship title secured by an Audi 'powered by Spiess' is celebrated in the
European Cup.
