FIA Formula 3 International Trophy
What a weekend!
Marco Wittman is the winner of the Grand Prix de Pau – with a clear lead over the rest of the field. When crossing the finish line of the race held on 22nd May at the street circuit located at the foot of the Pyrenees, the 21-year old German had opened a 14.943-second gap over his toughest rivals, the Spaniards Roberto Mehri and Daniel Juncadella. At the same time, this win also means another important international success for Volkswagen and its partner, Spiess.
For the first time, the race held at the demanding 2.76.kilometre street circuit also represents a round of the newly created FIA Formula 3 International Trophy and Marco Wittman made for the first win of a German driver in the tradition-rich Grand Prix de Pau since Jörg Müller’s triumph back in 1996. At first he secured the pole, with his Dallara Volkswagen entered by French team Signature, and from there, he quickly opened a gap over his rivals to control the field until the race was over.
“What a weekend,” beamed the German. “I just have won the Grand Prix de Pau, set the fastest race lap – and I was the pole-sitter. It just couldn’t have come any better!”
For the Spiess Motorenbau GmbH engineers, the weekend in Southern France proved to be another busy one. After all, a third of the cars on the field relied of the Volkswagen power units that are attended to by Spiess.
