Formula 3 Euro Series
Still on course to the title
He still is on course to the title: Edoardo Mortara who is attended to by Spiess tuning has kept on extending his lead in the Formula 3 Euro Series Championship, on the penultimate weekend in August. At the wheel of his Dallara Volkswagen, the Frenchman also won at Zandvoort, Netherlands. With 77 points on his tally, Mortara now holds the lead ahead of Germany’s Marco Wittmann (55 points). This means that the two leading drivers in the planet’s most competitive young-gun series rely on Volkswagen engines.
“The race weekend at Zandvoort again proved to be a truly successful one for Volkswagen, their teams and their drivers,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “We still have got the best chances of securing the title.” For Edoardo Mortara, however, the weekend brought ups and downs. Following his superior win in the Saturday race, a collision in the Sunday round meant that he had to cope with failing to score points in a race for the first time, this year. “And this although my car was the fastest of the entire field,” the ambitious Frenchman fumed afterwards.
Both Mortara and Wittmann are racing for Team Signature. And this also applies to Laurens Vanthoor who came second on Sunday, in front of the jam-packed grandstands. The Belgian finished runner-up in the ATS Formula 3 Cup, last year, and contests his first Euro Series season.
