Formula 3 Euro Series

Lead extended

The third and fourth rounds of the 2010 Formula 3 Euro Series season were held this weekend at the Hockenheimring in summery conditions under blue skies and in front of packed grandstands. Just as it often had been the case in the recent past, Volkswagen dominated the race action, thus providing their technology partner Spiess a reason to celebrate. Currently, the 2-litre engines decorated with the VW logo represents the yardstick on the grid of the planet’s most competitive young-gun series.

With a one-two on Saturday and a podium finish on Sunday, Volkswagen drivers Edoardo Mortara (Italy) and Marco Wittmann (Germany) extended their championship lead. On Sunday, however, Spain’s Roberto Merhi secured his maiden Formula 3 Euro Series win at the wheel of a Dallara-Mercedes.

The same feat was accomplished on Saturday by Marco Wittmann. From his pole position, the 23-year old took the lead right away to defend it throughout the race and also celebrate his Formula 3 Euro Series debut win.

“Following the great season kick-off in France, we experienced another successful Formula 3 Euro Series weekend,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “I think that the combination of Team Signature, our drivers and the Volkswagen engine currently represents the series’ most competitive package.”

For Marco Wittmann, reducing the gap of fellow Volkswagen driver Edoardo Mortara was vital. “I wouldn’t mind if the season continued like that,” beamed the German. “It goes without saying that I’m proud and delighted, following my first Formula 3 win.”
