Formula 3 Euro Series

Back-to-back wins in the UK

Volkswagen drivers Mika Mäki and Brendon Hartley left the United Kingdom following the British Formula 3 Euro Series rounds with two impressive winner trophies in their hands. At the tradition-rich Brands Hatch circuit they won the races of the planet’s most competitive young-gun series held on 05th and 06th September respectively. “It’s just great to have secured back-to-back wins in the home country of motor racing,” beamed Holger Spiess following the success of the two young guns and their 2-litre power units.

For Finland’s Mika Mäki, the win on Saturday was his first triumph in the season. From his second position on the grid, Mika took the lead at the wheel of his Dallara Volkswagen as early as on lap one to then defend it until having taken the chequered flag. “It’s fantastic,” he said afterwards. “I want to thank both my team, Signature, and Volkswagen. The key factor for my win was my great start and afterwards, I just had to focus on avoiding making any mistakes.”

Then, on Sunday, it was Brendon Hartley’s turn to be over the moon. For the New Zealander it also was his maiden Formula 3 Euro Series win. The Dallara Volkswagen driver made perfect use of his pole position, made a good start and took the lead right away. Even two safety car periods couldn’t stop the 19-year old Carlin motorsport driver. Hartley: “I controlled the race and avoided taking any unnecessary risks. The season so far was anything but easy but I think that we are back on the road to success, now.”

It goes without saying that Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen also was delighted. . “A great weekend for Volkswagen,” he said. “For the first time, our Formula 3 Euro Series teams and drivers have won both rounds of a race weekend. Everybody has worked hard to male this success possible.”
