Formula 3 Euro Series
Even more Volkswagen power
In 2009, a new team featuring a striking name and prominent persons both at the helm will make its debut on the Formula 3 Euro Series grid: Kolles & Heinz Union. The new team also will be ‘Powered by Volkswagen’. This means, that the Spiess Motorenbau engineers attending to Formula 3 Euro Series single-seaters will have to cope with an extended area of responsibilities.
“I’m truly delighted about the new member of our Formula 3 family and wish Kolles & Heinz Union a very successful debut season,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “The two team founders are true motor-racing experts and with their driver choice, they have proven that they are determined to battle it out at the front end of the field right from the start. With Carlo van Dam, they have signed an experienced and fast racer for our driver line-up.”
Dr. Collin Kolles has his mark – inter alia – as former Formula 1 Team Principal and furthermore, he competed in one of the Formula 3 Euro Series’ predecessors – the German Formula 3 Championship – with an own team. Werner Heinz has been working as motor-racing manager for several decades and has been or still is working for successful racing drivers such as Nick Heidfeld, Frank Biela or Tom Kristensen.
In 2007, 22-year old Dutchman Carlo van Dam prevailed in the German ATS Formula 3 Cup and in the following year, he won nine rounds of the Japanese Formula 3 Championship to secure the title in superior style.
