Formula 3 Euro Series
Successful season finale
For the Spiess Motorenbau GmbH engineers, the longhaul trip to the former Portuguese colony Macao truly paid off: in the 55th edition of the Macao Grand Prix, they attended to Italy’s Edoardo Mortara who secured the fine second place, at the wheel of his Dallara Volkswagen. Throughout the weekend, Mortara was one of the quickest drivers on the extremely demanding 6.2-kilometre street circuited located outside the gates of Hong Kong.
“Congratulations to Keisuke Kunimoto and Team Tom’s Toyota for their success in Macao,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “I think we were a tough rival and gave them a hard time on their way to winning the race. And with three Volkswagen drivers having finished second (Mortara), fourth (Mika Mäki/Finland) and sixth (Laurens Vanthoor/Belgium) respectively, we may be happy with what we achieved in our comeback in the Formula 3 World Finals held in Asia”.
Edoardo Mortara who secured the runner-up position in the 2008 Formula 3 Euro Series Championship for Volkswagen also impressed in the prestigious Macao Grand Prix. The Italian who races for French Team Signature dominated most of the practice sessions and won the qualifying race to finish runner-up in the feature race – ahead of Brandon Hartles (Dallara-Mercedes).
