Second place in the championship a fantastic success

This result exceeded all expectations: Volkswagen driver Edoardo Mortara finished runner-up in the 2008 Formula 3 Euro Series Championship. This result also represents an early success for the Spiess Motorenbau GmbH staff responsible for the project. After all, it was the first full season contested by the new Volkswagen Formula 3 engine.

“The Volkswagen Formula 3 engine has proven itself right away,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “We always had what it takes to secure top ten positions without having to benefit from mistakes or problems of our competitors. With three race wins, Volkswagen did not only exceed the expectations but even our secret hopes.”

In addition to the runner-up position secured by Italian Mortara, Volkswagen also celebrated a remarkable success in the team ranking: for the first time in its history, French team Signature Plus succeeded in coming second, in the planet’s most competitive young-gun series.

Inspired by these successes Kris Nissen looks ahead to the future: “We are going to continue our Formula 3 Euro Series involvement, next year. We expect to again have to battle it out with strong competitors – resulting in close and thrilling motor racing. At the same time, we also will go on with our ATS Formula 3 Cup activities and even might enter an additional championship.”
