Formula 3 Euro Series
Mortara celebrates historic win
The Spiess Motorenbau GmbH engineers travelled home to Ditzingen
with a great triumph under their belt: on 01st June, 2008, Edoardo Mortara secured
a historic win for Volkswagen. At the wheel of his Volkswagen Dallara, the Italian
won the Sunday round of the Formula 3 Euro Series races held on the challenging
street circuit of Pau, Southern France. Just six months after Volkswagen's Formula
3 comeback made in September 2007.
"The first win of the Volkswagen Group's Formula 3 engine represents
a special success," said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "In addition,
the entire Pau weekend proved to be a pleasant experience, for us. By securing
top-ten results in every practice session we demonstrated our engine's competitiveness
in continuous style." Edoardo Mortara also was delighted. "My car proved to
be just perfect throughout the weekend and in the Sunday race, the VW engine
with its extraordinary driveability represented the optimum support for my successful
chase. To be the championship leader with a 14-point lead at this point in time
is a comfortable situation."
On Pau's the 2.76-kilometre circuit, located at the foot pf the
Pyrenees, Mortara already had finished runner-up in the Saturday round. On Sunday,
the Signature driver therefore had been seventh on the grid but battled his
way up to cross the finish line as winner.
