ATS Formula 3 Cup
More than expected
The ATS Formula 3 Cup is getting more and more interesting, with the exclusive Volkswagen engine prepared by Spiess being one of the key factors making for the series’ increased attractiveness. It is expected that the 2012 ATS Formula 3 Cup field will feature some 20 single-seaters equipped with the new Volkswagen Power Engine. In addition, there will be the ATS Formula 3 Trophy cars and so, it looks as if a total of more than 25 cars could roll onto the Cup starting grid, this year.
“We didn’t expect such a rush,” reveals Bertram Schäfer who is responsible for organising the ATS Formula 3 Cup, “Particularly not in the first year. A success that couldn’t have been realised without strong and reliable partnerships, such as the one with Volkswagen Spiess Motorenbau GmbH.”
While the delivery of the exclusive engines to the teams is running, Performance Racing succeeded in completing the driver line-up for their three single-seaters. The team based at the Silverstone Circuit, UK, will be represented on the 2012 ATS Formula 3 Cup grid by Austrian Rene Binder, Swiss Yannick Mettler and Sweden’s John Bryant-Meisner. And there is another Cup newcomer who arguably will attract a lot of attention, in the 2012 season: Lucas Auer, the nephew of former Formula 1 ace Gerhard Berger, is going to contest his Formula 3 debut season for the reigning champions, Van Amersfoort Racing.
