Predominance galore

Winning a championship in an even more predominant style is virtually impossible! On his way to winning the 2011 ATS Formula 3 Cup title, Richie Stanaway outclassed the entire field. At the wheel of his Dallara-Volkswagen entered by Team Van Amersfoort Racing, the Kiwi secured the title early, on the penultimate race weekend of Germany’s fastest single-seater series.

Among the first felicitators on 17th/18th September at Assen was Holger Spiess. Together with his Spiess-Motorenbau GmbH engineers, the boss also attended to the car of the new champion. “Witnessing the performances of Richie was truly impressive,” he said. “He proved to be competitive in each of the 16 races contested to date and I’m convinced that he is going to once again demonstrate his talent in the season finale at Hockenheim.”

Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen also praised the new champion: “Congratulations to Richie Stanaway and Team Van Amersfoort Racing. They dominated the championship this year and Richie is the deserved champion. By winning the title in such a superior style he has proven that he is one of the most promising motor-racing talents.

For Volkswagen, who also won the 2009 and 2010 titles courtesy of Laurens Vanthoor and Tom Dillmann respectively, it’s the third consecutive ATS Formula 3 Cup title, with the Spiess engineers always having been on site to make for the fine-tuning and the proper settings of the engines.

In 2012, the Volkswagen Formula 3 control engine will make its ATS Formula 3 Cup debut. The 230bp 4-cylinder power unit reduces the engine costs by about a third and features an innovative push-to-pass system that temporarily increases the engines’ horsepower output by 20bhp. And once again, Spiess Motorenbau GmbH is involved in this trend-setting concept.
