ATS Formula 3 Cup
Perfect Easter weekend
With two race wins in two races, two fastest race laps as well as two pole positions, one certainly may call it a perfect race weekend and a successful start into the new season. And that’s exactly what happened on the Easter weekend at Oschersleben. Throughout the ATS Formula-3-Cup event, the drivers powered by Volkswagen engines attended to by Spiess held the top positions.
The season kick-off provided a clear hint to what may be expected in the 2011 season of Germany’s fastest single-seater series. The rookies displayed a stunning shape and competitiveness, in the first two of the 18 races of the 2011 season, with Richie Stanaway delivering in particularly impressive style. The New Zealander did not only win both races but also scored the two extra points for having set the fastest lap in both rounds. Meanwhile, Tom Blomqvist also impressed. The son of former World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist always was among the front-runners and even made it to the podium, in round one. And there is a third particularly fast newcomer: Hannes van Asseldonk. He is Dutch, attracted attention by securing a pole position and like the aforementioned rookies, he also races Dallara Volkswagen.
Holger Spiess was happy with the achievements of the young talents: “They truly impressed me with being that well prepared and with their matured approach,” he said. “Following this ATS Formula-3-Cup season kick-off we may hope for an outstanding season.” By the way: 14 of the 20 cars on the ATS Formula-3-Cup grid are powered by engines that have been prepared by Spiess Motorenbau GmbH in Ditzingen.
