ATS Formula 3 Cup
Champion with
Volkswagen and Spiess
Laurens Vanthoor is the new ATS Formula 3 Cup Champion. By winning the Cup, the just 18-year old from Zolder secured the most important title of his career to date early. “I’m extremely proud of the new champion and truly happy that the power of the Volkswagen engine helped him to win the title early,” said Holger Spiess on the penultimate weekend of August. With four more races to be contested, Vanthoor has got 132 points on his tally and none of his rivals will be able to close in on him. Therefore, the Team Van Amersfoort Racing driver now is the clearly youngest champion in the ATS Formula 3 Cup history.
“Congratulations to Vanthoor,” added Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “He has dominated the ATS Formula 3 Cup from the first round and therefore has deserved to win the title. Following our win in the Dakar Rally, the Formula 3 title triumph represents another highlight in Volkswagen Motorsport’s 2009 season.
“I want to thank my team – Van Amersfoort Racing – Volkswagen and Spiess Tuning who have been supporting me since I started my single-seater racing career,” beamed Vanthoor. “Following my Formula 3 debut in 2008 we opted for also contesting the 2009 ATS Formula 3 Cup season – and the decision paid off. I’m proud of having given Volkswagen their first formula 3 title since their comeback as Formula 3 engine supplier.”
