ATS Formula 3 Cup
Vanthoor celebrates his first back-to-back wins
The first congratulators were Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen and Holger Spiess, Managing Director of Spiess Motorenbau GmbH. They both could be truly proud as Laurens Vanthoor (Van Amersfoort Racing) just had secured his first ATS Formula 3 Cup back-to-back wins, with his Dallara Volkswagen. And the fact that he succeeded in scoring 23 of the maximum of 24 points to be scored at Oschersleben underlines that the 18-year old currently races in a class of his own, in Germany’s fastest single-seater series.
With eight of the season’s 18 races contested, the Belgian has got 74 points on his tally and is the dominating championship leader, with his team-mate Stef Dusseldorp (48 points) holding second position. At Oschersleben, however, the rookie had to find out that the life of a racing driver can be difficult, at times. He suffered the crash of his life, resulting in a nearly fully destroyed car. “Now I now that the line between winning and losing is extremely thin, in Formula 3,” the Dutchman said afterwards.
The Volkswagen triumph at the Motorsportarena Oschersleben was completed by the runner-up finish of Brazilian Rafael Suzuki (Performance Racing) in the Saturday race. Prior to the coming two rounds at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz (4th to 5th July), Laurens Vanthoor has won five of the eight races contested to date. “That’s good,” says the Belgian. “After all I want to secure the title to then make the step up to the Euro Series – and it goes without saying that I want to do so with the support of Volkswagen.”
