ATS Formula 3 Cup
Win in the season finale
He even could have won all the two season-finale rounds but in the end, Laurens Vanthoor had to settle for celebrating one race win and impressing massively. In the ATS Formula 3 Cup season finale, the just 17-year old Belgian secured his second win of the 2008 season. At the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, Laurens Vanthoor proved to be a class of his own, at the wheel of his Dallara-Volkswagen 307.
On 11th and 12th October, the gifted young Team Van Amersfoort Racing driver set the fastest laps in both races. In the Saturday round, he held a four-second lead and seemed to be on the way to securing a dominant win when the damaged single-seater of Adaley Fong made a sudden end to his race. On the final race lap, Vanthoor couldn’t avoid hitting the car that had stranded at right angle to the track – and his race was over.
The Sunday round, however, compensated the Belgian for the bad luck he had suffered on Saturday. He took the lead right at the start and controlled the field throughout the race to reward himself with the race win and the additional point for the fastest race lap. “Today, not only the Volkswagen engine alone succeeded in demonstrating its full potential but Laurens Vanthoor did so, too,” Holger Spiess praised the 17-year old. “He arguably will have a successful future in motor racing.”
