ATS Formula 3 Cup
First win for Vanthoor and Volkswagen
For quite a while it was obvious that ATS Formula 3 Cup driver is a truly gifted driver who may look forward to a great future in motor racing. Now, the young Belgian secured his maiden win in the fastest German single-seater series. On 21st September, Vanthoor won the 16th round of the season, held at the Sachsenring – a circuit representing an outstanding challenge for every racing driver. For the only 17-year old, this success represents the icing on the cake of a steep upward trend experienced in the past six races: four runner-up finishes, a race win and a pole position – a truly remarkable record.
“I was extremely reassured by the fact that my environment featured the full competence of engine tuner Spiess, this weekend,” said the winner. After all, it was company boss Holger Spiess himself who attended to the Dallara Volkswagen single-seaters of Laurens Vanthoor and his team-mate, Rahel Frey. Particularly on Sunday – in wet and correspondingly slippery conditions – having the chance of relying on optimum engine and suspension set-ups proved to be vital.
Vanthoor delivered a both pugnacious and matured performance. During the start, executed behind the safety-car for safety-reasons, the Team Van Amersfoort Racing driver had to settle for second position behind pole-sitter Frédéric Vervisch. Just a few laps later, however, he started pressurising the latter and soon passed him with a courageous overtaking manoeuvre. Afterwards, the Belgian quickly extended his lead to secure his maiden Formula 3 triumph, in the end.
“Now I’ve finally got the knack,” beamed the Sachsenring winner. “I came close to going nuts because of all these runner-up finishes. In the ATS Formula 3 Cup season finale, held in three weeks time at Oschersleben, I’m going to really push once again to deliver in fine style and offer my services for the 2009 season, this way.”
