ATS Formula 3 Cup
The power unit to succeed
The new engine called 'OPC Challenge' does not only power the common
ATS Formula 3 Cup winners, it even helps exotics and local heroes celebrate
major triumphs - as witnessed at the Nürburgring, in the support programme
of the Truck Grand Prix. In front of more than 150,000 spectators, the
seventh round of the season was won by an Asian driver, with a native
prevailing in round eight.
For Recardo Bruins Choi, a dream came true: on 07th July, the 21 year
old was the first Korean to ever have won a Formula 3 race. And he did
so at the wheel of the Dallara OPC Challenge entered by Team Fritz van
Amersfoort Racing. At the end of the 25-lap race, he crossed the line
with an impressive 2.480-second lead over his team-mate, championship
leader Carlo van Dam.
On Sunday, Christian Vietoris proved to be invincible. The local hero
from Gönnersdorf, located just a 20-minute trip from the Nürburgring,
rocketed from his second grid position into the lead to control the race
at will, afterwards. Despite crossing the finish line just 0.697 seconds
ahead of Recardo Bruins Choi, his win never was at risk. For the 18-year
old reigning Formula BMW Champion, it also was the maiden Formula 3 win
of his career.
On Saturday, all the top seven relied on the OPC Challenge on the way
to their successes and on Sunday, the top-four finishers were powered
to their results by the new Formula 3 power unit. And they all have got
one thing in common: the engine for helping them succeed is tuned in Ditzingen,
by Spiess Motorenbau.
