ATS Formula 3 Cup
Across-the-board success
Following the perfect debut into the 2007 season, it seems appropriate
to talk about an across-the-board success, with two Formula 3 ATS Cup
race weekends being contested. And this does not only apply to the prospering
series that has got an own TV magazine on German TV station premiere alone
but also to a new engine concept that is celebrating a stunning streak
of success.
The OPC Challenge Engine designed and produced by 'Spiess Motorenbau
GmbH' succeeded in convincing both in the season kick-off at Hockenheim
and the second race weekend, held at Oschersleben. After all, all the
four race wins and pole positions were secured with the OPC Challenge
Engine, with all the four fastest race laps also having been set by drivers
relying on the new power unit.
When it came to designing the OPC Challenge based of the extremely successful
Opel Formula 3 engine, cost reduction was the main goal. The requirement:
'One engine for the entire season.' To realise this goal, Spiess reinforced
the aggregate in several areas and designed it for long maintenance intervals.
At the same time, a slight extension of the air restrictor to 27 millimetres
helps to compensate for the loss of power. At the end of the day, the
first four rounds of the season proved that all the goal set were realised
in an extremely successful way.
