ATS Formula 3 Cup
Challenge Engine made by Spiess
Since the foundation of the German Formula 3 Championship, Spiess Tuning
has been closely linked to the series' success story. Again and again,
the medium-seized, Ditzingen based company succeeded in implementing trend-setting
innovations in the highly complex F3-engine environment. Currently, there
is another project running that is extremely important for the future
and preservation of Germany's national Formula 3 sport, and again, this
project is carried out by Spiess: the Challenge Engine.
The new Challenge Engine will make its debut appearance within the scope
of the 2007 ATS Formula 3 Cup season. During the design of the new power
unit on Opel basis, the main focus was set on durability and equality
of opportunity. 'One engine for the entire season' was the motto. And
indeed: Spiess designed the engine in a way that it can be used throughout
a season without needing a revision.
To have the chance of delivering on the same level as the other Formula
3 engines, the Challenge Engine was equipped with an air-restrictor increased
by one to now 27 millimetres. In the technology area, the Challenge engine
was revised in the seat ring area, with the pistons also having been reworked.
Changed suction pumps and the adapted oil pressure represented other significant
components on the way to designing an engine for the future. The first
ten Challenge Engines for the costumers have been ready to collect since
late February.
