RECARO Formula 3 Cup
Opel and Spiess on the way to once again securing the title
32,000 motor racing enthusiasts at Assen! The Rizla Racing Days turned
out to be a major success. For the first time in the history of the rich
in tradition Dutch circuit - every year the venue of the famous Assen
TT, contested by the world's best motorbike racers - all the eyes were
focused on Formula 3 racing. The RECARO Formula 3 Cup represented the
highlight of the event, with the 13th and 14th rounds of the season forming
a spectacular part of a truly felicitous event.
For the sixth time, already, the Racing Days organised by cigarette paper
manufacturer Rizla succeeded in luring the crowds to Assen. And the young
guns contesting the German Formula 3 series delivered motor racing at
its best with battles lasting several laps and overtaking manoeuvres taking
place during the course of nearly every single lap of the race held at
the 3.851-kilometre 'Circuit Assen'. Quite obviously, it was the icing
of the cake of this great Formula 3 show that Ferdinand Kool, a Dutch
driver, made it to the highest step of the podium. On Sunday, Irishman
Michael Devaney secured his fifth win in the 2005 season.
Hence, once again Opel and Spiess succeeded in getting the upper hand,
in the 13th and 14th rounds of the season and are still undefeated, in
the season so far. Quite obviously, the successful cooperation is on the
way to securing another title. With just four more races to go, Peter
Elkmann has come very close to making his dream come true. The 23-year
old driver of the Dallara Opel-Spiess entered by the racing team of Swiss
Jo Zeller holds a 38-point lead over second placed Michael Devaney. Although
there are still 48 points to be scored, it has to be admitted that the
Irishman's chances of securing the title are close to zero. At the end
of the day, Devaney's title hopes were virtually destroyed by the budget
problems that forced him to miss the first two round of the season.
Now, the RECARO Formula 3 Cup is approaching a major premiere. On 27th
and 28th August respectively, it will be the first European single-seater
series to contest races on an oval circuit, with the races held at the
EuroSpeedway Lausitz' tri-oval representing the 15th and 16th rounds of
the season.
