Opel Spiess keeps on dominating

Eight races, eight wins secured by Opel and Spies - a perfect record. Even the fact that a fourth manufacturer - Mugen - entered the seventh and eighth rounds of the RECARO Formula 3 Cup, Germany's fastest single-seater series, didn't prevent Michael Devaney and Peter Elkmann from winning the races behind the wheels of their Dallaras F304.

Peter Elkmann in particular currently enjoys a run of success. In the course of the past four races, the 23-year old scored a massive 41 points out of a possible maximum of 48. The driver from Steinfurt proved to be extremely cool, is able to wait for his chance but doesn't hesitate to battle it out, if necessary. His only problem: the start. "Maybe we should make flying starts," he jokes.

In the Saturday race at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, held at the first weekend of July, Michael Devaney clinched a well deserved victory. "I realised my direct championship rivals, Frank Kechele and Ho-Pin Tung, retiring due to technical problems," said Elkmann after the race. "Therefore, there was no need for risky manoeuvres and I settled for third place." The runner-up position was secured by Martin Hippe from Essen, also behind the wheel of an Opel powered car.

Therefore, it came as no surprise that Siggi Spiess was delighted and was visibly proud when presenting the trophies to the three drivers who had secured their successes with the Spiess designed two-litre engines.

On Sunday, however, Peter Elkmann and his Swiss team, Jo Zeller Racing, proved to be invincible. In front of more than 10,000 motor racing enthusiasts, Elkmann gained his third RECARO Formula 3 Cup win, thus increasing his championship lead. Hence, he will be the clear leader when the second half of the season will be kicked off this weekend, at the Nürburgring.
