Formula 3 Australia
Title triumph in Australia
Following Carlo van Dam's (Dallara Opel-Spiess) superior title triumph
in the ATS Formula 3 Cup, Spiess Motorenbau GMBH now may celebrate another
success: the Australian Formula 3 Championship also was won with a power
unit decorated by the label 'Spiess-Power'. On the first November weekend,
Dallara Opel-Spiess driver Tim Macrow won both the final race of the season
- held at the Oran Park - and the championship title.
"That was my best race ever," beamed the happy champion. "I simply can't
believe having secured the title. The team has done an amazing job. Both
car and engine were just perfect."
By winning the Australian Formula 3 Championship, he celebrated a success
his dad Peter narrowly missed out on, in the 1980s. And he did so despite
having been only fourth on the grid, with his Dallara Opel-Spiess entered
by the cooperation Cooltemp Racing-Scud Racing. "I just nailed the start,"
Macrow added. "It was the best ever start I have made in anything. The
start was crucial because whoever won the first lap was probably going
to win the race. Due to the sophisticated aerodynamics, overtaking is
anything but easy, in Formula 3."
Tim Macrow is the 51st Australian Drivers Champion and during the Australian
Motorsport Awards held in December, he will receive the 'Cams Gold Star'
- a success Spiess-Power had a stake in.
