Hard work – great reward
On the ADAC Masters Weekend at Hockenheim, a lack of work wasn’t the problem Spiess Motorenbau GmbH had to cope with: in addition to the ATS Formula 3 Cup, the British Formula 3 Championship also raced in Southern Germany, on the last weekend in May. And the races of both series were dominated by the engines attended to by Spiess.
In the ATS Formula 3 Cup, all the three drivers on the Sunday podium represented the Volkswagen camp: race winner Tom Dillmann was joined by Stef Dusseldorp (runner-up) and Daniel Abt. On Saturday, Daniel Abt and Felix Rosenquist were on the way to give Volkswagen another one-two but then, Abt made a mistake while trying to pass Rosenquist for the lead and pushed the latter of the track. Abt was penalised for the incident and so, Nico Monien (Dallara Mercedes) inherited the win that definitely would have been secured by a Volkswagen driver, otherwise.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen proved to be invincible in the three British Formula 3 Championship rounds on German soil. Race one and three were won by France’s -Eric Vergne and the second by Brazilian Gabriel Dias.
Other than the ATS Formula 3 Cup that contests two races per weekend, the British series opts for a shorter qualifying format but holds three rounds per event.
