Outstanding season kick-off
What a start into the 2010 season! In the Formula 3 season openers, Volkswagen dominated in virtually unparalleled style. In both the Formula 3 Euro Series and the German ATS Formula 3 Cup, the race wins were secured by drivers powered by the Volkswagen 2-litre engine and attended to by the Spiess engineers.
The Formula 3 Euro Series teams contested their 2010 season kick-off at Le Castellet, France. The Saturday round was won by Signature’s Formula 3 returnee Edoardo Mortara at the wheel of a Dallara-Volkswagen. And Mortara’s team-mate, Germany’s Marco Wittmann, added to the Volkswagen success by finishing runner-up. “My start was fantastic,” beamed the Italian after the race. “Having been fifth on the grid, this start represented the key factor for my success.” In the Sunday race that has to be contested by the top-eight drivers of the Saturday round in the reverse order format, Edoardo Mortara came second and consequently, he left the French race venue as championship leader. The next two rounds will be held on 24th/25th April at Hockenheim.
At the same time, the Volkswagen triumph in the ATS Formula 3 Cup was even more superior. In both rounds of the season kick-off held at the Motorsportarena Oschersleben, the top-four positions were secured by Volkswagen drivers. On Saturday, Denmark’s Cup newcomer Kevin Magnussen won the race with his Dallara-Volkswagen for Team Motopark Academy and on Sunday, last year’s Cup runner-up, Stef Dusseldorp (Van Amersfoort Racing), crossed the finish line as race winner. With these results, the fastest German single-seater series demonstrated the extraordinary competitiveness of its 2010 field: after all, one of the races was won by rookie Magnussen and the other by the experienced Dutchman Dusseldorp. Meanwhile, young German Daniel Abt delivered in amazingly matured style to finish second and third respectively. The ATS Formula 3 Cup is going to hold its next two rounds on 08th and 09th May at the Sachsenring.
